UHN Election Board Calls for Special Election to Fill Vacancies on Tribal Council

District 1: All of St. Mary Parish

District 8: Jefferson Parish – Marrero (70073, 70072), Barataria (70036), Lafitte (70067) and Harvey (70058-70059)

District 9: Jefferson Parish – Metairie (70001-70006), Kenner (70062-70065),

Harahan (70123), Jefferson (70121) and Waggaman/Westwego/Bridge

City/Avondale (70094-96)

For a person to be eligible for election to any UHN Tribal Council office, that person must meet the following qualifications:

1. Be a registered voter of the United Houma Nation; and

    

2. Be at least 25 years of age, and

    

3. Be a high school graduate or have the equivalent of a high school diploma, and

    

4. Reside in the voting district in which the person seeks office for two (2) or more consecutive years preceding the election, and

    

5. Be free of any felony conviction, and

    

6. Not hold a tribal office, unless the person is seeking election or re-election to that office.

    

Any tribal member interested in seeking candidacy for the above vacant seats should request a Qualifying Packet at the address above. Interested candidates have from March 1 to March 31, 2009 to submit formal applications of intent and qualify for these seats. All qualifying documents are physically due at the above address by Tuesday, March 31, 2009, 4:00 pm, Central Standard Time. The UHN Election Board will examine all qualifying requests and documents and certify all eligible candidates seeking election. If more than one candidate qualifies for any seat, elections will take place on Saturday, June 13, 2009.
