Congratulations United Houma Nation!!!
Through the hard work of the engineers, attorney, members of the KUHN Advisory Board and volunteers, the UHN submitted two applications for NCE radio stations. One of these stations would be positioned in Golden Meadow and the other in Chauvin reaching the majority of the UHN population in Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes and spanning out into the Gulf of Mexico to reach Tribal fisherman. The proposed stations would broadcast Native programming that addresses the educational and cultural needs and interests of the UHN and its citizens. In addition, the station would broadcast public affairs programming, news and public service announcements in response to the problems, needs and interests of the entire listening audience. The educational and cultural programming would be both informative and instructional in nature and will propagate UHN history, culture and spiritualism.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has awarded the United Houma Nation a construction permit for the Golden Meadow application submitted in October of 2007. This means that the UHN has three years to build a radio station, purchase necessary equipment, and have engineers test the equipment. Once this is completed, the UHN will have to apply to the FCC to convert the permit into a license.
The UHN has received a three year ANA grant award for the KUHN radio station. This award will greatly assist us in making the radio station and online streaming a reality.
KUHN Advisory Board members and volunteers are needed. Interested parties should email kuhn@unitedhoumanation.org for more information.
