Project Venture
The Louisiana Project Venture program is funded by the Institute for Indian Development, a division of the Inter-Tribal Council office in Baton Rouge. Throughout the state of Louisiana there are currently five official sites. There are two sites currently active in the United Houma Nation communities. The first UHN site is being hosted in Terrebonne parish by Jamie Billiot, and is being housed in the Dulac Community Center. The second UHN site is being hosted in the Lafourche parish area by Dixie Breaux, and is being housed in the UHN Relief Office in Raceland. Project Venture has three major focus points. The first, In-School Project Venture activities focusing on developing team building, problems solving, communication and cooperation skills through the use of experiential games and activities. The second, after school and weekend activities including backpacking, mountain biking, camping, rock climbing, rappelling, once a week after school meetings, and community service projects. The third is a week long summer camp. During camp, students experience a variety of outdoor activities, personal growth and healthy lifestyle workshops, along with some cultural events. Terrebonne parish and Lafourche parish students attended the week long summer camp from July 7-11, 2008. While at the camp the participants did various activities that followed along with the programs curriculum. Also, both of the UHN site’s participants decided to get together on some upcoming service projects and fundraiser activities.
