UHN Partners with Mercy Family Center to Launch How's Your 5? Iniative

The UHN is proud to announce that its collaborative with Mercy Family Center is ready to launch the How's Your 5? Community Resilience and Public Health Campaign. The UHN Wellness Program will oversee this launch and be the mechanism to disperse the campaign training, materials and orientation.  Tribal citizens can learn more about this initiative by attending any Wellness event.  Please remember the UHN Wellness Center is open every Tuesday from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm for all tribal citizens and their spouses.  The Center's location is 991 Grand Caillou Road, Bldg #3, Houma, LA  70363. 

How’s Your 5? creates a common language to support each other across five fundamental domains of human experience: Work (employment/school), Love (relationships/social support), Play (selfcare/joyful activities), Sleep (sleep habits), and Eat (consumption – eating and drinking). How’s Your 5? can help create a “buddy system” that supports family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and state of mind. 

How does it work?

Awareness We live in a very busy world. Our lives can be like riding a fast train where people, places, moments pass by us in a blur. We are moving so fast that we don’t take the time to care for ourselves or other people. How’s Your 5? creates a shared community awareness of the importance of a healthy work space (work/school), supportive relationships (love), joyful activities (play), nourishing sleep (sleep), healthy eating and moderation in alcohol consumption (eat). The How’s Your 5? logo is a colorful and simple reminder that helps create awareness of the five fundamental domains so you can then “check in” with yourself and those around you. 

Conversations How many times have you asked someone “How are you?” and they answered “fine” or “good” ending the conversation? Asking “How’s Your 5?” is specific. Asking “How’s Your 5?” will begin conversations about work, love, play, sleep and consumption (eat). Sharing with each other our challenges and success can lead to creative solutions to help improve our healthy living. If you really want to know how someone is doing, ask “How’s Your 5?” You may be surprised at how much you learn about yourself and those around you.

Connections Being aware and engaging in conversations about healthy living, mental wellness and resiliency strengthens our connections with others. By using How’s Your 5? As a “conversation starter” you can strengthen the relationships and social support networks you have now with your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. 

Using How’s Your 5? as an “ice breaker” can grow your community’s social support network. Introducing people to How’s Your 5? invites them to provide and receive support to/from those around them. When people discover how simple and effective How’s Your 5? is in getting people to talk about their work, love, play, sleep and consumption (eat) they enthusiastically invite others to join the conversation about healthy living, mental wellness and resiliency. 

How Does It Work? Conversation starters and ice breakers should be casual and natural..

Work How’s School? Are you employed? Are you working too much, too little? Is it difficult? Are you in a new job or new school and having difficulty adjusting? 

Love How’s your family? Friendships? Are you getting along with other people? Do you have relationships that are difficult or strained? Do you feel loved by someone? 

Play Are you taking the time to have fun and do the things that bring health and joy to your life? When’s the last time you had fun? 

Sleep Are you sleeping too much, too little? Do you have trouble going to sleep, staying asleep or waking up? 

Eat Are you eating too much, too little, not the right things? Are you drinking too much, using drugs or alcohol to help cope with your stress?
