    Earlier this week, the Houma based Krewe of Hercules became a co-sponsor to the UHN's 6th Annual Celebrating ABILITIES Powwow.  The powwow, which will take place at the Houma Airbase Pavilion on September 20th and 21st, is dedicated to raise awareness of the many strengths and abilities individuals with disabilities bring to our community.  This year's efforts are focused on raising awareness of the effects of diabetes within the community. ..

    In 2010, UHN housholds self reported that 1 in 4 households has someone living with diabetes.  Our communities have very high rates of diabetes and the Tribe recognizes that those figures are growing.  In order to best help our citizens living with this condition, the UHN began a Diabetes Registry. ..

    As we have done in the last 2 previous years, youth activities throughout the summer are currently being developed.  Last year activities were jam packed and included day trips to tribal communities so that youth could visit one another's communities, volunteer in restoration projects, visit college campuses, etc.  We also appreciated the generosity of the New Orleans Saints who opened their doors and allowed our youth a backdoor view and tour of the training facilities, attended practice followed by a meet and greet with players and gave the opportunity for about 40 of our youth to attend a live game in the Mercedes Benz Superdome.  ..
