Consul General au New Orleans, Jean Claude Brunet has been reassigned by the French Government to Munich, Germany. Principal Chief Thomas Dardar met with him last week to discuss his re-assignmnet that is effective July 16, 2014. Mr. Brunet, who has been assigned to the New Orleans post throughout the four years of Principal Chief Dardar's first term, has been not only the UHN's local contact with the French government, but also a friend. ..
The United Houma Nation Vocational Rehabilitation Program first came about funding in October 2000. In that time period hundreds of UHN tribal citizens with disabilities have sought assistance with getting or keeping employment. The Vocational Rehabilitation Program is a unique disability program that focuses on the abilities, skills and interests of the clients as opposed to only focusing on the person's limitations. The program is intended to help individuals, families and the community achieve self-sufficiency by gaining living wages for individuals with disabilities thus reducing their dependence on social programs. ..
The United Houma Nation Vocational Rehabilitation Program is hosting a 4 part workshop series for the Older Worker. More and more older individuals are seeking employment as retirement and social security are not enough to support their families. However, older job seekers often struggle with how to be competitive and overcome the technology gaps compared to the younger work force. ..
The United Houma Nation and the Dulac Community Center are hosting a 3-day "Culture Camp" for tribal youth between the ages of 8-18. The camp will be three full days and 2 nights at the Dulac Community Center. Youth will have the opportunity to explore tribal culture including regalia making, stickball and traditional cooking. Also lots of opportunities to have fun in the sun and make new friends. ..
World-Renowned and Louisiana born Chef John Folse was found filming along the bayous of Terrebonne this week as part of his "A Taste of Louisiana" cooking show that broadcasts on PBS. Chef Folse intends to feature the food of the United Houma Nation as part of his program in the coming months. The exact broadcast date is expected to be August 14, 2014 and will be a three part feature. ..

The United Houma Nation became a partner with the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) under a National Institute of Environmental Health (NIEH) funded post oil spill research project. This phase of the project, commonly called GC-HARMS, is assessing the health of individuals who consume seafood. Particularly, it is trying to determine IF seafood contains elevated levels of harmful chemicals post Deepwater Horizon disaster, as well as do the individuals that consume seafood post oil spill show signs of exposure to harmful PAHs (poly-aromatic hydrocarbons), which are the harmful chemicals found in crude oil. ..
For many years Congress has told the US Department of the Interior that the Federal recognition process is broken and in need of reform. Last year under the direction of Assistant Secretary Washburn, the Department began working towards that reform. A series of tribal consultations and public forums were held throughout the United States in 2013 asking tribal representatives and interested parties what they would like to see changed. ..
Earlier in the week, the United Houma Nation Vocational Rehabilitation Program announced that the 2014 Celebrating ABILITIES powwow will be dedicated to raising awareness about diabetes management and prevention. As the UHN experiences such high rates of this complicated condition (nearly 1 in 4 households), the staff wanted to ensure there was an opportunity to have tribal citizens and supporters weigh in on the issue. ..
