Chief Dardar’s heart-felt words on diabetes last week and the affects it has had on the tribal citizens of the United Houma Nation remind each of us the importance of learning how to prevent diabetes or if living with diabetes to make better choices. The United Houma Nation Diabetes Program was created out of a need recognized by tribal leadership as well as the staff of the Association of American Indian Physicians (AAIP). As the program and tribal staff prepare for this year’s powwow that will honor those living with diabetes, we are excited to tell you about some of the activities the program is providing to assist not only those living with diabetes, but every tribal citizen. ..

As we prepare for the 6th Annual Celebrating ABILITIES Powwow next month, the powwow committee has booth space available for tribal artists who are interested in selling their handcrafted items. Booth space begins at $75 for both days of the powwow along with a donation for the silent auction. Powwow attendance averages 1,200 people over the 2 day event and the powwow committee provides 2 meal tickets for vendors on Saturday evening. ..

Earlier this week, the UHN Administration received notice that the Tribe was successful in its application to the US Department of Education's Rural Business Enterprise Grant Program. The purpose of the grant is to provide "Starting A Business" classes and workshops for tribal citizens residing within the UHN Service Area to determine if they are ready to begin a small business. The Service Area encompasses St. Mary, Terrebonne, Lafourche, Jefferson, Plaquemines and St. Bernard parishes. ..
