In 2010 nearly 1 in 4 United Houma Nation households reported having someone with diabetes living in the home. The self-reported rates of diabetes in our community are alarming. The UHN Diabetes Program is pleased to begin putting a "local face" on the disease and will begin sharing educational materials featuring people you know who are managing diabetes as opposed to diabetes managing them.
The first person selected to feature is UHN Councilman August "Cocoa" Creppel from Marrero. Most people would never think Cocoa was living with Type II diabetes as he has always lead such an active lifestyle as a Jefferson Parish fireman. Cocoa is proof enough that diabetes can affect anyone. So why does Cocoa work so hard to manage his diabetes...because his family is worth it!
If you are a tribal member living with diabetes and want to get involved and be notified of program activities, please contact Onita Harris at (985)223-3093 or firstname.lastname@example.org
