Louisiana Governor's Office of Indian Affairs Opens 2018 Scholarship Application Period

Posted by United Houma Nation on Friday, March 09, 2018

Many people have seen the beautifully designed American Indian prestige license plate available through the Louisiana Department of Motor Vehicles, but many people do not realize the additional funds collected from the license plate actually funds a statewide scholarship competition for American Indian students pursuing higher education.  The scholarship award, which is facilitated through the Louisiana Governor's Office of Indian Affairs is intended to award supplemental monies that would be sent directly to the college/university/institute of higher learning of eligible American Indian students who are enrolled citizens of one of thirteen Louisiana tribes or groups - of which the United Houma Nation is one.

Selection is based on heritage, financial need and a short essay.  In years past, recipients have received an award of $500.  At this point the exact number of scholarship awards is uncertain as it is dependent on the number of license plate sales and renewals.  If you would like to see this fund grow it is not too late to purchase your own license plate at any Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles.
