Good carbs, bad carbs; brown vs. white; cake or no cake; those are the questions but what are the answers? When living with diabetes, individuals are sometimes confused by the information they receive from television, family, friends and the internet on what foods they can consume or should avoid.
A healthier food lifestyle can be challenging whether living with chronic diseases or desiring to stay healthy. The United Houma Nation Diabetes Coalition has partnered with the Nicholls State University (NSU) Department of Allied Health Sciences to offer a series of nutrition education sessions. These sessions will include information on portion sizes, how to read food labels, healthier alternatives in food choices, a field trip to the supermarket, and cooking a favorite dish using alternative ingredients.
What is required to attend?
Commit to four (4) classes offered on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 - 8:00 pm at NSU.
Bring a loved one (spouse, partner, caregiver) who will also participate in the classes.
Complete a food log/record of what you eat for a week which will be due on the first night of class.
Bring a family recipe that you would like to make healthier.
The classes will be held on April 30, May 7, 14, & 21, 2014!
There are only 12 spots available and is based on first come, first serve. Preference will be given to individuals living with diabetes. Don’t forget, you can bring someone with you who will also learn about healthier nutrition.
The deadline to register is April 25, 2014.
